Losing weight is a great way to improve your appearance as well as your overall health. Unfortunately, weight loss can have some unwanted side effects. In this case we mean loose, sagging, and drooping skin.
When patients come to our Victoria practice with drooping and sagging around their stomach, we often turn to tummy tuck surgery (abdominoplasty) as a solution. There's a popular variation on the tummy tuck that's also helpful: the mini tummy tuck.
About the Traditional Tummy Tuck
A tummy tuck is performed in order to reduce the appearance of loose skin, stretchmarks, and sagging around the lower abdominal area. These are common issues that people face after they have lost a considerable amount of weight. It's simply the nature of skin laxity. The added weight stretches the skin out a great deal, and it is not able to shrink back around the person's lighter frame. Only tummy tuck surgery can address these problems with loose skin. Other body contouring procedures work on similar principles.
What Is a Mini Tummy Tuck?
A mini tummy tuck is a variation on the traditional tummy tuck. It can also reduce the amount of loose skin around the lower abdomen and eliminate stretchmarks, but it is designed for patients who do not require a full tummy tuck to achieve their aesthetic goals.
How a Mini Tummy Tuck Is Different
During a traditional tummy tuck, an anchor-shaped series of incisions is made along the lower abdomen. This involves a circular incision around the belly button, a lateral incision along the lower abdomen from hipbone to hipbone, and a vertical incision that connects these two.
During a mini tummy tuck, all that is required is the lateral incision along the lower abdomen. All of the necessary adjustments and changes can be achieved through this single incision.
This abdominal incision may span from hipbone to hipbone, or it may be even small, simply occupying the middle portion of the lower abdominal area. The mini tummy tuck can be tailored to the patient's needs.
Ideal Candidates for a Mini Tummy Tuck
The best candidates for mini tummy tuck surgery are people who suffer from stretchmarks and loose skin around their lower abdomen as a result of weight loss. They should be in good overall health and not suffer from medical conditions that would make the surgery a potential risk to general wellness.
How Visible Is Scarring After Mini Tummy Tuck?
Scarring is to be expected after undergoing any kind of surgery. The incision from a mini tummy tuck will be somewhat noticeable in the first weeks and months of healing. With time, the scar will fade, though it may not do so entirely even after several years.
Thankfully the incision from a mini tummy tuck is low on the abdomen, which means that it will be concealed by many undergarments, pants, shorts, and bathing suits.
Considering Your Body Contouring Options
In addition to the mini tummy tuck, there are other body contouring options to consider that can help reduce sagging, drooping, and stretchmarks. These can be discussed in greater detail during your consultation at our practice.
