Tumescent Liposuction Offers Safe, Predictable Results
Patients who wish to eliminate stubborn fat deposits can often achieve their desired results with liposuction. Tumescent liposuction is less invasive and allows for a quicker recovery than traditional liposuction. The techniques also relies on local anesthesia instead of general anesthesia, which naturally lessens patients' risk of complications. At South Texas Plastic Surgery in Victoria, TX, Dr. Brian F. Burns uses this technique to provide patients with stunning results and minimal side effects.
Tumescent vs. Traditional Liposuction
Tumescent liposuction and its traditional counterpart have the same objective: to create a smoother, more contoured appearance. However, the methods have a few notable differences. While traditional liposuction is performed under general anesthesia, tumescent liposuction only requires local anesthesia. This means it is not only safer, but more cost-effective as well.
While traditional liposuction is performed under general anesthesia, tumescent liposuction only requires local anesthesia.
The cannula used for tumescent liposuction is much smaller – one-sixteenth of an inch in diameter. Dr. Burns prefers tumescent liposuction over traditional techniques largely because blood loss is minimized. Therefore, sutures and surgical drain tubes are not necessary. Most patients experience minimal discomfort following tumescent liposuction.
About the Procedure
The tumescent liposuction procedure is similar to traditional liposuction. However, one additional step makes the treatment much more predictable and smooth: anesthetic injections. During this first step, Dr. Burns will administer a large dose of lidocaine and epinephrine into the treatment area. This fluid causes the fat deposits to swell and firm up. As a result, Dr. Burns can remove the stubborn areas of fat with less effort and better preserve surrounding healthy tissue.
Benefits of Tumescent Liposuction
Epinephrine shrinks the blood vessels. This allows for several benefits over traditional liposuction:
- Less post-operative discomfort
- Little to no bleeding
- Minimal swelling
In fact, while most patients experience post-operative swelling for nearly two months after traditional liposuction, individuals who undergo tumescent liposuction generally notice diminished swelling after two weeks. In addition, some patients require three weeks of recovery before returning to work following traditional liposuction. In comparison, those opting for tumescent liposuction can often resume normal work schedules after only 48 hours. Perhaps most impressively, the final results of tumescent liposuction are typically noticeable after only one to two months, while a full recovery after traditional liposuction often takes about six to nine months.
But Is It Right for Me?
Like traditional liposuction, tumescent liposuction is not intended as a weight loss treatment, so patients should be in good health and should be reasonably close to their ideal weight. Tumescent liposuction can enhance the appearance of the face, neck, chin, arms, and legs. It is often performed on larger areas of the body as well. During an initial consultation with Dr. Burns, he can help you determine if this procedure is appropriate for your cosmetic goals.
