Determining Your Candidacy
A tummy tuck is intended to eliminate excess fat and skin from your stomach. During this procedure, Dr. Burns will also repair damaged or separated muscles, giving you a flatter and smoother midsection. A tummy tuck is an extensive surgery designed for dramatic change. It can be a great option after pregnancy, bariatric surgery, or massive weight loss. Please note that the procedure is not designed to help you lose weight. To qualify for a tummy tuck, you should have a healthy body mass index (BMI). You should also be committed to an active lifestyle and to maintaining the results of your treatment.
Dr. Burns will conduct a complete evaluation before recommending a tummy tuck. He will take your health history, examine your skin tone and muscle movement, and discuss your goals. If you desire a more conservative treatment, he can recommend an alternative option, such as liposuction.
What to Expect during Your Tummy Tuck
As with all of our surgeries, our tummy tucks are tailored to meet each person’s particular goals. In most cases, your tummy tuck procedure will take place under general anesthesia, although this can vary, depending on your preferences. After providing sedation, Dr. Burns will create incisions. Typically, one will run from hipbone to hipbone, and another will go around your naval. If you only want to address the area of your stomach below your belly button, Dr. Burns may recommend a mini tummy tuck. During this procedure, he will create a single incision just above your pubic line.
After creating the incisions, Dr. Burns will lift and repair the stretched muscles underneath. If desired, he will perform liposuction to eliminate fat pockets. Then he will trim away excess skin and reposition your belly button, if needed. Finally, he will close up the incisions and place compression bandages.
Recovery and Healing
All of our tummy tucks are performed on an outpatient basis. If you live locally, you will be able to return home that same day. Like many patients, however, you may have travelled some distance to benefit from Dr. Burns’ skill and expertise. In this case, you should stay in a local hotel for three to four days. That way, you can rest, and Dr. Burns can monitor your recovery.
To minimize discomfort after your tummy tuck, we provide Exparel®, a local anesthetic that lasts 72 hours. South Texas Plastic Surgery was one of the first practices in the country to offer this medication. We will also provide compression bandages, additional medications, and tips for a smooth recovery.
