Mini Tummy Tuck

Enhance Your Lower Abdominal Contours with a Mini Tummy Tuck

Patients with a small to moderate amount of excess fat and skin below the belly button should consider a mini tummy tuck, which is a quicker, lower cost alternative to a traditional tummy tuck. Dr. Brian F. Burns performs this procedure at our Victoria, TX, practice, and has over 25 years of plastic surgery experience. When you have your treatment completed at South Texas Plastic Surgery, you can rest assured that your mini tummy tuck will be performed with the utmost attention to safety and quality of care.

While a traditional abdominoplasty addresses the entire abdominal area, a mini tummy tuck focuses on the lower abdomen.

About Mini Tummy Tucks

A mini tummy tuck is a body contouring procedure that can eliminate excess fat and remove sagging skin in the lower abdomen. By tightening the underlying muscles and smoothing the skin, patients who undergo this treatment can enjoy a more defined and contoured tummy. In contrast to a full abdominoplasty, a mini tummy tuck targets only the lower abdomen, between your navel and your pubic bone. A traditional tummy tuck treats the entire abdominal area, including your hips, back, and love handles.

Benefits of a Mini Tummy Tuck

A mini tummy tuck offers numerous advantages over a traditional abdominoplasty. While a full tummy tuck generally requires the repositioning of the navel and two separate incisions, a mini tummy tuck can be completed with only one incision just above the pubic bone. This technique yields excellent results, and patients can hide their surgical scars easily under swimwear and other clothing. Because it is less invasive, the mini tummy tuck offers faster, more comfortable healing. Patients also choose it because it is a more affordable alternative to traditional abdominoplasty.

Who is a Candidate for a Mini Tummy Tuck?

Dr. Burns will determine your candidacy during an initial consultation at our office. By listening closely to your goals and reviewing your medical history, he will help you determine if a mini tummy tuck is the right treatment for you. In general, candidates for traditional tummy tuck surgery have more substantial cosmetic concerns. Patients who qualify for a mini tummy tuck generally have:

  • Some extra fat deposits in the lower abdomen
  • Excess skin in the area between the navel and pubic bone
  • No planned future pregnancies
  • Stretched muscles in the lower abdominal area
  • Good overall health
  • Already reached their goal weight

It is important to note that a mini tummy tuck is not a weight loss surgery. Therefore, qualifying patients should be near or at their ideal size and weight. Patients who gain significant weight following the procedure risk compromising the results of the surgery.

Mini Tummy Tuck Procedure

While some patients may require general anesthesia for a mini tummy tuck, most people find they are comfortable with a combination of mild sedation and local anesthesia. To perform the procedure, Dr. Burns will make a small incision just above the pubic bone. Typically, this incision is much smaller than one placed during traditional abdominoplasty. However, the exact length of the incision will depend on the amount of excess tissue that needs to be removed. Once the incision is made, Dr. Burns will tighten the lower abdominal muscles, and the extra skin will be excised. Lastly, the skin will be evenly stretched over the abdomen, and the incision will be carefully closed with stitches. If stubborn fat deposits are an issue, they can be removed with liposuction during the same procedure.

Because it is less invasive, the mini tummy tuck offers faster, more comfortable healing. Patients also choose it because it is a more affordable alternative to traditional abdominoplasty.

Healing and Recovery

Some degree of discomfort and swelling is to be expected following your mini tummy tuck. Most patients find they require one to two weeks off work to recuperate. The swelling will typically subside during this time. You will be given a detailed list of post-treatment guidelines, which should be followed exactly to help you experience a successful recovery.

After the first couple of weeks, we recommend that patients remain as mobile as possible. However, any strenuous exercise or heavy lifting should be avoided. Full recovery takes approximately four weeks, at which point you will notice the visible results of your procedure.
