Achieve a Successful Eyelid Surgery Recovery with an Expert Surgeon
Blepharoplasty, or eyelid surgery, involves a period of recovery just like any other surgery. The eyelid surgery recovery process for patients at our San Antonio, TX, facility will typically take three to four weeks. Your healing process can be expedited when your surgery is performed by an expert surgeon, such as Dr. Brian Burns, and when you follow your aftercare instructions appropriately. During your pre-operative consultation, Dr. Burns and the staff at South Texas Plastic Surgery will provide you detailed care instructions for your upper or lower eyelid surgery, such as activities to avoid and medications to take, to help you achieve a smooth and successful recovery.
What to Expect During Your Eyelid Surgery Recovery
Although recovery timelines vary from patient to patient, you can typically expect the entire process to take approximately three to four weeks. As a skilled surgeon with over 25 years of experience, Dr. Burns will make your incisions in such a way to minimize scarring and discomfort and deliver long-lasting results. He will also provide detailed pre- and post-operative instructions for you to follow to help you throughout your healing process.
Before your procedure and for the first few days afterwards, you should avoid wearing clothing that will need to be put on and taken off over your head. Button-up shirts and loose-fitting clothing will prevent bandages and sutures from becoming irritated.
- Immediately following the procedure: Because of the anesthesia involved and the surgery being performed on your eyes, you will need to have someone available to drive you to and from the procedure and assist you at home for the first few days. Most patients can return home immediately following eyelid surgery, but Dr. Burns will monitor you for the first hour following the surgery to ensure you are responding well and there are no complications.

- Weeks 1⎼2: You may experience some redness, bruising, and swelling for the first seven days, but by resting with your head elevated and using cold compresses, you can avoid excessive fluid retention and bruising. You should change your bandages and apply medications as directed by your physician. During this time, Dr. Burns will remove any sutures and you may notice bruising and swelling begin to subside. You should rest your eyes as much as possible and wear dark sunglasses. Avoid excessive blinking, reading, working on your computer, watching TV, wearing contact lenses, and any other activities that may dry out your eyes. In most cases, patients can return to work after 10 days.
- Weeks 3⎼4: Avoid playing sports, exercising, and lifting heavy objects for the first three to four weeks or until Dr. Burns has authorized you to do so. Approximately four weeks following surgery, most swelling should be gone and you will likely enjoy better vision and a younger-looking appearance. There may be some minor scarring, but small scars are typically hidden in natural contours of your eyes and will continue to fade.
