Otoplasty Corrects Prominent Ears for a More Natural Look
Dr. Brian F. Burns can perform otoplasty, or ear pinning, at his Victoria, TX, practice for patients of all ages, bringing the ears closer to the side of the head. He is often asked to perform this procedure on young children during a crucial stage in their development, between the ages of five and ten.
Many children and adults are dissatisfied with the size or shape of their ears, and children are often teased because of the appearance of their ears. Addressing the issue early on can help improve your child’s self-confidence and protect him or her from taunting by other children.
Otoplasty is suitable for children and adults who are dissatisfied with the size or shape of their ears. If your child is self-conscious about his or her ears, and has suffered teasing, he or she may benefit from ear pinning. Dr. Burns has performed dozens of otoplasty procedures on children between the ages of five and 10, with great results. Otoplasty can also correct ear defects that a child suffered at birth, or trauma to the ears.
Dr. Burns prefers to schedule ear pinning procedures for children when they are not in school, usually over a break or during the summer. He will not perform the surgery if a child is not ready to undergo surgery, or if he or the parents feel that the child will not cope well with the recovery process.
Even as an adult, if you have spent years attempting to hide ears that embarrass you, you too may benefit from ear pinning.
What to Expect During the Procedure
Children are typically sedated with general anesthesia for ear pinning, whereas adults are typically given a local anesthetic. To begin the procedure, Dr. Burns will make a small incision behind one or both ears, depending on you or your child’s needs. This incision will expose cartilage for reshaping. Excess skin will then be removed, and the ear will be repositioned closer to the head. Dr. Burns will close the incision with sutures.
By addressing the problem early on, you can prevent future teasing and the negative emotional and psychological consequences that come with it.
Otoplasty typically takes between just one and two hours, depending on how much reshaping is required, and whether surgery is performed on one or both ears.
Benefits of Ear Pinning
There are numerous benefits of ear pinning:
- It is a safe and minimally invasive procedure, with very little risk involved for you or your child.
- Otoplasty can correct a wide range of concerns with a recovery period of just one week.
- There is minimal scarring involved, and Dr. Burns can position incisions so that they are nearly undetectable.
- Ear pinning can greatly boost you or your child’s self-esteem, and prevent or eliminate teasing by other children.
- Otoplasty patients are generally more confident in their appearance.
