Rhinoplasty Surgery Can Create Balance and Symmetry for Improved Facial Proportions
Changing the size or shape of your nose can dramatically enhance your facial appearance. If you are unhappy with the way your nose looks, Dr. Brian F. Burns may recommend rhinoplasty surgery during a consultation at our office in Victoria, TX. Commonly referred to as a “nose job”, rhinoplasty surgery can create more balance and symmetry between your facial features. This single procedure can have a major impact on your appearance. For an even more dramatic transformation, patients can elect to combine their rhinoplasty with another procedure, such as a facelift. To learn more about rhinoplasty, contact our office today.
Determining if a Rhinoplasty is Right for You
You may be a good candidate for rhinoplasty if:
- Your nose appears too long, too wide, or too thin
- The bridge of your nose has a large bump
- Your nose is crooked
- The tip of your nose is too pointy or too round
- Your nostrils are overly large or small
The procedure is also appropriate for patients who have either suffered trauma or struggle with breathing through their nose due to a deviated septum. In general, we recommend rhinoplasty to patients over the age of 18 who are in good overall health. While we can perform the procedure on those under the age of 18, it is generally only recommended in cases of injury or severe breathing difficulties.

What You Can Expect during the Procedure
Rhinoplasty is an outpatient procedure and may take up to two hours depending on your individual needs and cosmetic goals. Dr. Burns may utilize a number of techniques to achieve your desired results. He can perform open or closed rhinoplasty. Open rhinoplasty requires creating an incision on the underside of the nose across the columella, or the skin separating the nostrils and connecting the tip of the nose to the area above the upper lip. This technique is often recommended to patients who require more extensive work, as it allows for greater access to the underlying tissues and cartilage. Closed rhinoplasty creates hidden incisions within the nostrils and is usually recommended to patients who need relatively minor work. Dr. Burns can discuss open vs. closed rhinoplasty during your consultation.
After creating the incision, Dr. Burns can then carefully reshape your nose. He may do so by trimming away excess tissue and reshaping the cartilage, or by placing implants to add volume in a certain area. Once the nose is reshaped to your desired specifications, he will suture your incisions and place a splint to stabilize your septum. He will also place gauze in your nostrils to minimize any bleeding. Typically, you can return to work after about a week and slowly return to normal activity levels within four weeks. It may take up to a year before the results of your rhinoplasty are fully visible.
